AWOL
My first exhibition + the start of my 'Bloom Girl' series.
AWOL is a military term for ‘Absent Without Leave.’
It’s also the name of my debut exhibition, which I shared in 2018.
As a young girl attempting to navigate adulthood, I often feel particularly at war with myself and what it means to be a woman. AWOL explores the confusing world of adolescence + identity.
For one night only, we transformed Brisbane’s most magical french warehouse into a romantic military wonderland; a place of bullet hole blooms, floral soldiers + heartbreak.
We had 300 punters come through for it.
My friend and triple j darling Feki spun tunes, and there was delicious food and drinks for you to enjoy (on me of course ;)
This exhibition is where my Bloom Girls (the big black and white floral pieces) began. 'Bloom Girl No. 1' was a piece I created in honour of women everywhere + it’s maybe my favourite image from the entire series.
To me she seems fragile, but defensive. Beautiful, but raw. I filled her eyes with flowers for all the lovers she couldn’t see past, and to protect her from everyone who couldn't really see her properly.
This entire exhibition was inspired by an incident I had in Paris with a conservative male artist, who told me he couldn't see past my 'tits' on instagram.
'How can I take your art seriously when you're dressed like a whore, asking for attention from the internet?'
My response was to throw a bash for 300 + the internet, and put more tits absolutely everywhere.
'Like this, love.'
A big thank you to our sponsors Stone and Wood for kindly helping bring this event to life.
